Open the free Converter tab and select Edit color to use your browser’s visual color chooser. Alternatively, select HEX or RGB, enter a value and press the convert arrow. The swatch and code rows show the selected color. Use Photo picker instead when the color is already inside a picture.
Choose a color and copy its code
Start visually or with a known code
Choose Edit color on the large swatch. Your browser opens its native picker; its controls vary by device. If you already have a code, use the input fields instead.
Select HEX or RGB input
For HEX, enter three or six digits, such as #245BE8 or #F80. For RGB, enter three comma-separated whole numbers from 0 to 255, such as 36, 91, 232.
Check the swatch
Press the convert arrow after typing. Verify the preview rather than relying only on a name like blue, which can describe many different shades.
Copy the output you need
Use Copy beside HEX or RGB. The same browser tool also shows HSL and approximate CMYK. A notation change does not create a new physical measurement.
HEX color chooser or RGB selector: which should you use?
Use HEX when a web editor asks for a # code. Use RGB when an application provides separate red, green and blue channel fields. For the same RGB space, #245BE8 and 36, 91, 232 describe the same channel values.
A color picker and a color chooser are names for the same basic task: selecting a shade. If a project already specifies the value, enter that value directly. Picking a similar-looking shade on a different display can introduce a mismatch.
A small HEX color chart to try
These are digital sRGB reference values. Copy a value into the picker to inspect it or use it as a starting point. The chart is not a paint catalog or a list of every possible color.
A six-digit color code has one pair for red, one for green and one for blue. FF is 255 and 00 is zero. White sets all three channels to 255; black sets them to zero.
Choosing a new shade is different from finding one in an image
Use the visual picker to explore a new digital shade. To identify a colour code in a supplied logo, screenshot or photograph, open that image in Photo picker and select the relevant point. Avoid photographing a display when you have the original file.
The browser photo tool samples its displayed preview. Its resizing and color handling can affect small details, so use the original design specification when an exact source value matters. The mobile app can also give descriptive names, while the browser tool focuses on codes.
Use Color Identifier when the color work moves to your phone
- Open the app’s converter for a known digital value, or its photo picker for an existing image.
- Read the supported values; the app listing describes HEX, RGB and CMYK.
- Use the camera for an approximate reference to a physical object.
- Save useful colors or organize them into a palette in the app.
A quick browser code, or a collection on your phone.
Try a one-time color selection free in the browser. Use the mobile app when camera access or saved color collections are useful.
The browser tools are free. Mobile features, limits and purchases depend on the current app and platform.
Questions about online color picker
Is the online color picker free?
Yes. The browser picker and converter are free and need no sign-up. The mobile app is free to download with in-app purchases.
Will Edit color show a color wheel?
That depends on your browser and operating system. This site opens the native color input; it does not promise a particular wheel, slider or grid interface.
Can I enter transparency or CSS color names?
The current typed inputs accept three- or six-digit HEX and the supported numeric formats. They do not accept alpha HEX or named CSS colors. Use a numeric code from the reference examples.
